Officials say that six adults were shot and hurt Wednesday when a fight broke out near a complex of schools in Oakland.

The Alameda County Health System’s Eleanor Ajala said three people were getting care at Oakland’s Highland Hospital. The patients, who could not be named, were in terrible shape.

OAKLAND — At least six adults were hurt Wednesday afternoon when multiple shooters opened fire at a school campus in Oakland.

Around 12:45 p.m., a shooting happened at the King Estates schools. Which Rudsdale Newcomer and Bay Area Technology School (BayTech) shared. The schools are 8210 Fontaine St. in the city’s Oak Knoll/Golf Links neighborhood. There is also a site for the Sojourner Truth Independent Study online learning program, but there are no students.

Lt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said that six people were being treated at hospitals in the area. Kelly said that at 4 p.m., at least one patient had been sent home.

On the 8200 block of Fontaine Street, where the shooting took place. The Bay Area Technology School. Rudsdale Newcomer High School and Sojourner Truth Independent Study are all in the complex near the shooting. Around 1:45 p.m., someone reported hearing shots.

Mayor Libby Schaaf wrote on Twitter that the school shooting “shocks the soul—our schools are safe places for our children.”

She said that the six people who died were all adults. No one knows if they go to school or not.

Oakland school statements

The mayor of Oakland, Libby Schaaf, said on Twitter that all people who were hurt were adults and were getting care at hospitals. Allison noted that of the six people injured, two were in life-threatening situations, one was treated and sent home, and the other two were about to be sent home. The other two didn’t have injuries that could kill them.

Allison also said that the shooting happened on the King Estates campus in the Rudsdale area.

After a short lockdown, the students were let out of school. The United Lutheran Church at 8800 Fontaine Street is where parents were told to meet their kids.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) said agents from its San Francisco office were heading to the shooting scene.

The California Highway Patrol said that it had closed the exits for Keller Street from eastbound and westbound I-580 that are right next to where the shooting happened. I-580 was still open, and there was no estimate for when it would open again.

The Rudsdale Newcomer school is part of the Oakland Unified School District. Its website says that its students recently arrived immigrants between the ages of 16 and 21 who left their home countries because of violence and instability.
